Concentrate Firepower!

I've recently begun attempting to teach people how to play the Star Wars Armada miniatures game at my local wargames store in Leicester.

Whilst Star Wars Armada is set in the same universe as the Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game the similarities end there. Armada attempts to recreate the huge fleet engagements seen in Star Wars such as the Battle of Endor. Ships have to plan orders multiple turns in advance, movement is decided on the fly and

This game was against Jack, who works at the store. He decided he wanted to try out the Rebel Alliance so I took the Empire. We each chose a couple of upgrades and squadrons so he could learn the different aspects of the game.

We only managed to get one picture of the game, but it does a pretty good job of summing up the tone of the entire game. Jack somehow thought it would be a good idea to fly his rebel starships in a full on frontal assault against the Victory class Star Destroyer (despite me making it quite clear before the game that this would be a bad idea). Needless to say, the Victory concentrated firepower and proceeded to blast the CR90 into space dust in a single round.

The Rebels put up a valiant effort however, with Luke Skywalker making the most of his ability to ignore shields and crippling the Victory. In the end though they couldn't withstand the amount of firepower the Victory put out and the Empire emerged victorious.

I think Armada is a relatively easy game to teach to new players. Whilst commands are decided in advance things such as movement are decided 'on the fly' making it more forgiving when mistakes are made.

Once I have some more players hooked I'm going to be looking at organising some tournaments in the Leicester area, so stay tuned for updates!
