Suicide Squad Box Preview - Captain Boomerang
Hi everyone,
Tonight i'm going to be looking at the stat card for Captain Boomerang from the upcoming Suicide Squad box set. With a rep of only 48 and funding of $200, he's much cheaper than the existing Captain Boomerang in points and rep. So lets have a look at what needed to be sacrified in this slimmed down version.
Captain Boomerang is an extremely low cost Free Agent. In fact I think
the only cheaper free agents are currently Hugo Strange and Batgirl. Lets take
a closer look at him and see what the changes are from the original, more
expensive Captain Boomerang.
Suicide Squad Box Captain Boomerang
Original Captain Boomerang
Personal Traits
- Elusive
- Hates Batman/Law Forces/Green Arrow - He's a bad guy, what do you expect?
- Master Marksman - Always useful with a ranged specialist allowing to re roll to hit with any of his selection of Boomerangs.
- Ricochet – This seems like a useful trait for captain boomerang. For just 1 special you can make a second attack against a new enemy within
- Primary Target: Loot - I don't feel that this is a very useful trait as his speed is only 2. However thanks to his Bladed Boomerangs he can run around the board and doesn’t need to stay still to maximise his shooting. He also has 3 ammo, so shouldn't need to camp on an ammo crate as some ranged specialists do.
- Suicide Squad Member
Weapons
- LE Boomerang - This is classed as a firearm (wounds on a 2+) and when combined with his re-rolls to hit can put out some reliable damage (Rate of fire 2, 2 blood damage per hit). Its only drawbacks are that he only has one ammo for it and its short range of 20cm means you’re unlikely to get your full RoF when shooting.
- Bladed Boomerang – The bladed boomerang is less damaging than the LE boomerang as it is not a firearm and only does one blood damage and one stun damage per hit. However it is sharp so gets re-rolls to wound, making it almost as good as a firearm and better against targets that have a bulletproof vest. The bladed boomerang is also a throwing weapon, so he maintains his Rate of Fire 2 even if he moves. This somewhat helps to compensate for the range, which again is only 20cm.
- Melee Boomerang – This seems to be a bladed boomerang he is using in melee. It has the same damage (1 blood and 1 stun) and retains sharp. His attack of three means that he can put out up to 7 damage in a round of combat, however in melee he obviously doesn’t get his re-rolls to hit from master marksman. A lot of ranged specialists don’t have a dedicated melee weapon and have to fight unarmed, so this is a welcome addition to Captain Boomerang.
So Captain Boomerang appears to be a bit of a strange
character. He wants to use his ranged weapons but needs to get within short
range to do so. This exposes him to melee attacks quite easily and with his
endurance of 5 and no defensive traits, he won’t last long at such short range.
I think that a Couple of cheap henchmen could quite easily beat him to death in
melee considering his defence is only 3.
His primary target: Loot is quite useful in a suicide squad
list as it helps to prevent characters from being blown up as long as he is
holding a loot token. The only issue is getting that loot in the first place.
His movement is only 2 and he doesn’t have anything to help him manoeuvre around
the board. If he has to run around chasing down loot then at least he still
gets the full Rate of Fire from his bladed boomerangs
